Zuko - No Longer of Royal Blood?

Before I start this blog, I want to point out that it contains spoilers from the new comic book, Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Search (Part 1). If you don’t want to be spoiled, I suggest you don’t read this.

In all honesty, though, being that you’re on Tumblr, I would be VERY surprised if you haven’t been spoiled already xD.

So, after reading part one of The Search, I literally just sat there for a good thirty seconds with my jaw dropped. All I was thinking was “Did that REALLY just happen?” I went back and re-read it just to make sure I didn’t receive that information incorrectly:

My Dearest Ikem,

It’s taken me a long time to admit it, but you were right. I belong with you and nothing is worth this pain. My one consolation is our son, Zuko. When I look into his eyes, it’s as if I am looking into yours. My thoughts are with you always.

Love, Ursa.

Unlike what seems like A LOT of people, I think this is an interesting twist in the story and I’m honestly okay with it. This piece of information answers indirect questions about Zuko’s relationship with Ozai and Azula. This explains why Ozai showed dislike for Zuko and never really accepted him, no matter what he did to try to please him. It explains why he favors Azula over Zuko. He doesn’t favor her just because she’s a Firebending prodigy, or because she’s just as cold and ruthless as he is. He favors her because she’s his actual child. I think I’ll write a separate blog about my take on Zuko and Ozai’s relationship. Anyway…

This also explains why Azula never felt loved by Ursa and always thought that she liked Zuko more. If you look back, Zuko as a child and briefly as a teenager (before his exile, of course) was a bit timid and wasn’t a fighter but stood up for himself and others. He was pretty gentle. Ikem is the same way. He’s not a fighter, but he didn’t hesitate to confront Azulon and Ozai when they were about to take Ursa away (even though he was clearly scared shitless). This showed some similarity between Ikem and Zuko.

A lot of people seem upset about Ikem being Zuko’s father for a lot of reasons, one being that Zuko is no longer of royal blood. Being that he isn’t Ozai’s son, he technically should be dethroned. Azula even says she has proof (the letter Zuko found) that could dethrone Zuko. This also means that Uncle Iroh isn’t Zuko’s uncle. Some fans think that Ikem isn’t really Zuko’s father because of the resemblance Zuko has with Ozai.

Alright, let’s breakaway from the world of Avatar for a second and get realistic and by realistic, I mean let’s remind ourselves that this is a cartoon. It’s possible that Mike and Bryan didn’t come up with the idea of Ozai not being Zuko’s actual father until after The Last Airbender was over and they started working on these comic book shorts. Meaning that yes, Ozai and Zuko were initially supposed to resemble each other because the idea of Ozai not being Zuko’s father had not been thought of yet. With that said, however, just because Ikem and Zuko don’t look alike doesn’t mean he isn’t his father.

Zuko could easily get his genetics from his mother’s side of the family. Let’s also not forget that his Great-Grandfather is still Avatar Roku. They all have pale skin and yellow eyes. Their gene’s could easily be more dominant than Ikem’s family. Hell, I’ve seen Maury episodes where I’m like “That guy is DEFINITELY that kids father” and then suddenly I’m hit with “In the case of two year old Jermiah Dequan-Demarco Johnson Jr., you are NOT the father!” I’ve also been in a situation where I was with my best friend and his mom and she ran into an old friend at the grocery store. Her friend goes “Those boys look just like you!” when I’m in no way related to either one of them. I also get people saying I look JUST like my mom, whereas other people say I look JUST like my Dad. It just goes to show, that you can’t go off of looks when it comes to comparing children to their parents.

People also have this crazy idea that Ursa committed adultery and that they can’t incorporate that into the story because it’s a children’s book. Okay, really? Let’s be serious here 1.) Saying this is a book meant for children is a HORRIBLE defense when Aang and Katara are constantly kissing each other. Mike and Bryan also have a great way of sugarcoating things for the kids, but making them so that us older teenagers and adult know the realism behind what really happened. Prime examples are rephrasing characters lines to imply death threats:

“You might have everyone else here buying your ‘transformation’, but you and I both know you’ve stuggled with doing the right thing in the past. So let me tell you something right now: You make one step backward, one step slip up, give me one reason to make me think you might hurt Aang, and you won’t have to worry about your destiny anymore. Because I’ll make sure your destiny ends, right then and there - permanently.” ~ Katara to Zuko

“I’m sparing you, Sozin. I’m letting you go in the name of our past friendship. But I warn you - even a single step out of line will result in your permanent end.” ~ Avatar Roku to Sozin

“This time I’m going to put you to sleep for good!” ~ Yakone to Aang

… and showing actual death scenes (Jet, Combustion Man, Avatar Roku, Amon and Tarrlok). But even with that said, adultery was not the case here. 2.) Ursa DID NOT commit adultery and even if she did, I highly doubt any child would even be able know what it was. They’d simply brush it off and accept it (the fact that Ikem is Zuko’s father, I mean).

The reason Ursa didn’t commit adultery is because she must have been pregnant with Zuko BEFORE Azulon arranged her and Ozai’s marriage. Anyone who knows how pregnancy works and understands the time in which these characters are living in would know that. I doubt they live in a time where pregnancy tests existed, and furthermore, Ursa simply wasn’t showing any signs of pregnancy when she left with Ozai.

To break it down even more in realistic detail, this is what possibly happened:

- Ikem and Ursa are dating and he eventually asks Ursa to marry him.

- She, being in love with him, naturally says yes.

- THEY HAVE SEX. (Zuko is conceived)

- A few days to a week or so later, but definitely no later than a month, Azulon arranges Ozai and Ursa’s marriage.

- Ozai and Ursa get married immediately. I imagine around this time, Ursa realizes she is pregnant with Ikem’s child, but simply keeps this secret from Ozai.

- THEY HAVE SEX. (Ursa and Ozai)

- Ozai, clearly not thinking of the possibility that Ursa had exchanges with her previous lover, assumes that the child she bears and eventually has, is his son hence the reason he is surprised when he reads the letter meant for Ikem.

The main reason that I know that she didn’t commit adultery is because the only communication she was able to have with Ikem was through letters. Letters that she tried to keep secret. It wasn’t like Ikem f*cking lived down the street and she could sneak out to visit him. Did you even watch A:TLA? Have you seen how hard it is to get in and out of the Royal Palace unseen, let alone try to leave the Fire Nation Capital? Do you REALLY think she could pull that off multiple times without being noticed? Sure, she did it once when she got banished, but that was ONE time. She couldn’t do that multiple times and not get caught. Guards patrol that place 24/7 and there’s no way she would have been able to sneak out, tiptoe passed guards, exit the Royal Palace, then exit the CITY and travel all the way to her old village to hook up with Ikem and come back. LOL are you serious?

Now, with all of that said, me and any other person who thinks Ikem really is Zuko’s father could be wrong. I’m not afraid to admit that. This series has a knack of pulling plot twists on top of plot twist. For example, Azula could have written that letter to mess with Zuko’s head or just to frame him. I mean, she does want the throne and she wants Zuko gone. She has constantly lied and manipulated Zuko to set him up for failure. The most notable being when she shot Aang with lightning. She KNEW Aang wasn’t dead. It was evident when Zuko confronted her about it:

“Please, Zuko. What ulterior motive could I have? What could I possibly gain by letting you get all the glory for defeating the Avatar. Unless somehow the Avatar was still alive. All of that glory would suddenly turn to shame. Sleep well, Zu-Zu.”

She told Ozai that Zuko killed him knowing that once Ozai found out Aang was alive, he’d banish Zuko again or do worse. She has even blatantly tried to kill Zuko:

Zuko: “What are you doing here?”

Azula: “You mean it’s not obvious yet?! I’m about to celebrate becoming an only child!”

Then again, if she did write that letter, who’s going to believe the mentally unstable Princess that got locked away in prison? Not many people are going to believe the girl who talks to mirrors and puddles, to be honest. BUT, considering we see a flashback with Ozai reading this letter, it might be safe to say that Zuko is no longer of royal blood.

brandysmellslikechocolate answered: no. the issue with Ikem being Zuko’s father is the unpleasant implication that good people only come from good people and vice versa.

I’m a noob at Tumblr so I don’t know how to respond to answers directly (Can you even do that? Somebody tell me!) so I’ll just respond this way. I don’t think that Ikem being Zuko’s father imply’s that good only comes from good and vise versa considering that Iroh is a very humble, wise and kind hearted person, yet his father is Azulon. Azulon was pretty bad and although Iroh has a dark past, he ultimately learned from his mistakes and became a better person. After learning Roku’s past, Aang even tells his friends that anyone is capable of great good and great evil, no matter where they come from. Also, when the Gaang is deciding on whether or not to let Zuko be Aang’s Firebending teacher, Toph tells them that considering Zuko’s screwed up family and the way he was raised, he could have ended up a lot worse. I think it’s more so who you are raised by, then who you come from that determines whether or not you become and good or bad person. Noatak and Tarrlok are prime examples of this. Ikem being Zuko’s father has nothing to do with how he was raised. In fact, Zuko’s battle with the good and evil inside of him came from the way his mother and father raised him. Ursa raised him to be a good person, while Ozai raised him to be cold and ruthless which is why he grew up feeling conflicted and confused.
